Microwave Mondays - Containers

Containers: Safe & Efficient

Picture
Safe containers – always use cookware designed for microwave use.  Not all plastic, glass and ceramic containers are microwave safe, check for labels.  If not approved for microwave use the glass or ceramic could shatter when heated directly in the microwave and the plastics could just generally melt themselves.  Ceramic glazes and unapproved plastics can also potentially leach toxins into your food.  ALWAYS check labels and packaging to ensure any container you may be putting in your microwave is safe for such use.  Personally, and I may be a tad biased here, I by far prefer using my Tupperware Vent 'n Serve Containers and Stack Cooker System when microwaving...stay cool handles, faster cooking times, designed with 'round' in mind (but that part comes next week!)

Efficient containers – Not all microwave cookware is designed equally.  A simple test is to fill the container with some water and microwave until the water boils.  If the container handles are too hot to touch then the microwave was using some of its energy to heat the actual container.  Heat the same amount of water in a Vent ‘n Serve or TupperWave Casserole, it will come to a boil faster and the handles will remain cool to the touch! Raised containers are also more efficient than ones that sit flat on the plate.  When the container is raised it allows microwaves to penetrate from the bottom as well, cooking the food more evenly.
