Save $80-$100 per Month with FridgeSmarts

A March 11th, 2011 article in the Edmonton Journal, Rising cost of food hits home for Edmonton family, outlined the rising costs of food in Edmonton:

"While it’s hard to say just how much prices will rise, some economists have said the typical Canadian grocery bill could increase seven to 15 per cent by 2012.

Statistics Canada says the average Alberta household spent $7,778 on food in 2009, meaning that could rise to $8,945 in 2012."

That's a hard hit to many families in these budget conscious times, especially  here in Edmonton where everything from electricity bills to gas for our cars, and now our grocery bills, seems to always be rising in cost.  So, when can spending more money actually help save you money?  When that money is invested in Tupperware FridgeSmarts.

Did you know the average family discards $80-$100 per month on spoiled and rotten fruits and vegetables?  That's like throwing money in the garbage!  Invest $89.50 in the Tupperware 4 Piece FridgeSmart Set (Full Retail $107.75) and make your money back in the first month when you actually use all of your fruits and vegetables before they spoil!

I use my FridgeSmarts religiously and we also compost using worms....well, when I first started using the FridgeSmarts I didn't have ANY spoiled produce to feed my worms.  It was weeks before I realized that I needed to be 'making' more produce scraps so as to ensure my worm population didn't die for lack of food!

When I first joined Tupperware I did a little experiment...these are my mushrooms that lasted for ONE MONTH (Sept 19 - Oct 19, 2010) in their FridgeSmart. All I did was open the container once a week and wipe away the condensation (as suggested for mushrooms and strawberries.) I ate these after the month, they were yummy and just fine to use!!

So what is a FridgeSmart?
  • It's a mini-crisper customized to specific fruits and vegetables with different breathing requirements
  • Comes with the Tupperware air & liquid tight seal and a ridged bottom to keep produce out of condensation
  • Two vents on the front for breathing requirement customization:
    -  Low-breathing produce (i.e. strawberries, mushrooms): both vents closed – minimum/no circulation
    -  Moderate-breathing produce (i.e. celery, peppers) – one open, one closed
    -  Heavy breathing produce (i.e. broccoli, spinach) – both vents open – maximum/full circulation
  • Vents work to balance oxygen coming in and carbon dioxide going out
  • Handy chart printed right on the side for quick reference of breathing requirements
FridgeSmarts are also known as Atmosphere Controlled Environment – ACE – Containers.  They were developed by researchers at the University of Florida...there is science behind these amazing fruit & vegetable saving containers!

How to optimize FridgeSmarts in your fridge:

  1. Take out one or all of your crisper drawers...you won't need them with the FridgeSmarts!  This will get you extra room to stack them! The FridgeSmart seal is texturized on top so the containers don't slip and slide, making them perfect for no slip stacking in your fridge.
  2. Place containers in the middle of fridge, not touching the back wall, for best refrigeration placement.  Too close to the back wall and your produce may freeze.
  3. When you finish with the produce, wash out the FridgeSmart and return it to your fridge.  When you return home from the market with your fresh produce simply place the produce in the waiting FridgeSmarts.  You don't remove your crisper drawers from the fridge when they empty, so use your FridgeSmarts as crisper drawer replacements to keep them on hand and easy to use.

There are many tips and tricks for actually using FridgeSmarts to store your produce, email me for more details on this if you're interested.  I just wanted to show how easy they are to keep in your fridge and how to optimize their use...detail on fruit and veggie tricks is a whole another post!

I removed the bottom crisper drawer in my fridge and use that extra space for my FridgeSmarts!

Benefits to the FridgeSmart System:
  • Easy to clean – wide grove on seal, curved corners, vents pop off, dishwasher safe
  • Easy to use - stackable and organized in your fridge
  • Keeps produce weeks longer than traditional crisper drawer
strawberries – last up to 2 weeks, i.e. you'll eat them up before they spoil every time!
mushrooms – 2 weeks for company, 3 weeks for family
  • Saves you money - the typical family throws away $80-$100 in produce a month...don't be that family!
Don't let rising food costs break your budget!

Invest $89.50 in the FridgeSmart 4 Piece Set (Full Retail $107.75) today and make your money back within a month.

And just a little update, I went through all the FridgeSmarts in my fridge and here's what I've got:

Just finished up 2 pints of strawberries bought just about 2 weeks ago.
Parsley bought just about 3 weeks ago, still fresh and crisp as the day I bought it.
Mushrooms from last Monday that are still fresh as new.
Celery from about 4 weeks ago, down to the last few stalks on the bunch, still crispy and fresh, just a few brown spots on the outside stalks that can easily be removed.

Seriously, where else do you get this kind of freshness in weeks old veggies? I LOVE my FridgeSmarts!!
